Dance Lighting

My lighting experience in dance is diverse and carries across dance recital formats, devised dance productions, and musical theatre staging. I have had the pleasure of enhancing and highlighting the stories told through movement without pulling attention away from the power of dance. The following are selected lighting design credits for dance productions. 

Queen City Theatre Co.'s
The Silo:
Devised Dance Performance

This dance event was created and collaboratively choreographed by Thomas Prater and Dais Johnson. Both performers: Devlin Ford and Michael Blackwood developed their routine over the course of a two month rehearsal process. As lighting designer, I attended three rehearsals a week to develop the lighting and emphasize the movements of the performers. This was a touring production and therefore the lighting had to be adaptable and easily assembled to create the same effects in different locations. 

Monmouth College Theatre's
The Nutcracker

Serving as lighting designer for The Nutcracker in undergrad was when I first discovered my love for lighting dance. This production was in partnership with the Arlene Smith Dancer's Studio. This show had community members and professional dancers from the Smith Studio together on stage. The skills I learned in this process continue to inform all dance designs I work on.

Galesburg Performing Arts
Fiddler on the Roof

I was hired to be the lighting designer for this production in Galesburg Illinois. This production was staged at the historic vaudeville Orpheum Theatre.  I designed and edited without cast or crew present, because of the busy scheduling of the theater. This design was challenging, as I worked long hours to make sure that the movements of the actors were emphasized without being able to test the design with the performers. I learned about the keys of preparation and pre-production planning while working on this production.
